Mayor steps on the scales
In keeping with tradition, Epsom & Ewell's new Mayor, Councillor Alan Winkworth was 'weighed-in' on Wednesday 2 July at Epsom Downs Racecourse.
The Jockey Room's scales, usually saved for weighing the sportsmen themselves, were brought out for the occasion which also saw the former Mayor, now the Boroughs new Deputy, Cllr Jean Steer, 'weighed-out' before Cllr Winkworth jumped on to be weighed.
He said: "I am thoroughly enjoying my new role and this weighing-in event is a fun way to officially inaugurate all incoming Mayors of this Borough. Weighing-in may be a relatively new tradition, but it is nice to be able to bring together the well-established heritage of the races and the Council which make-up Epsom & Ewell."
The weights of both the Mayor and Deputy remain closely guarded secrets but it was smiles all round as the pair posed for the cameras.
Cllr Winkworth has chosen three charities to support in his Mayoral year; Epsom & Ewell Citizens Advice Bureau, The Butterfly Appeal and Epsom & Ewell Scouts.
To take on his new Civic role, Cllr Winkworth has stepped down as Chairman of the Council's Leisure Committee. Cllr Clive Woodbridge is the new Chairman and Cllr David Wood is Vice-Chairman.
